NORTHERN TERRITORY / RankWire.AI / – The Australian Defence Force confirmed that a military vehicle rollover at Mount Bundey resulted in the death of a 28-year-old Australian Army soldier during a training exercise on Monday. In addition, five other soldiers sustained injuries during the same event. The Defence Force announced the incident on Tuesday, notifying the soldier’s family. The accident happened at the Mount Bundey Training Area, approximately 100 kilometres south-east of Darwin. The Defence Department urged the public to respect the privacy of those affected and their families.

Emergency responders from Northern Territory Police arrived at the training site around 4:20 p.m. on October 5. Both CareFlight NT and St John Ambulance also attended to the scene. Two injured soldiers were airlifted by helicopter to Royal Darwin Hospital at roughly 7:30 p.m., while three others were transported by aircraft at about 9:30 p.m. All five injured personnel remained hospitalized as of Tuesday. The authorities in the Northern Territory supported the medical evacuations from the remote military training zone.
Chief of Army Lieutenant General Susan Coyle stated that Defence has initiated an investigation into the fatal rollover. Military police secured the site, and a land accident investigation board will review the incident. Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole mentioned that police are assisting Defence and conducting their own investigation on behalf of the coroner. The cause of the crash has not yet been publicly disclosed. Coyle emphasized that investigators need time to determine what transpired before the Army considers any formal response based on their findings.
Investigation launched by Defence
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese extended condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the fallen soldier. Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles also issued condolences, describing the loss as a tragic event for the Army. Defence expressed its support for the families affected by the incident. Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro also conveyed her sympathies and appreciated the emergency teams involved in evacuating the injured soldiers from Mount Bundey to Royal Darwin Hospital.
Mount Bundey serves as a key training site for the Australian Army, situated south-east of Darwin. The area is utilized by Australian and allied forces for various exercises, including live-fire drills. The latest fatality follows another incident earlier in 2026 involving the Australian Army. Warrant Officer Class Two Lachlan Muddle, a soldier from the Special Air Service Regiment, died in May following a mid-air collision during parachute training at Jervis Bay. Another paratrooper was injured but survived with minor injuries in that incident.
Previous fatality at Mount Bundey
The Mount Bundey Training Area was also the site of a fatal incident in 2017, when Private Jason Challis lost his life during a live-fire urban training exercise. A subsequent coronial inquest in the Northern Territory investigated the circumstances of his death. The Department of Defence later pleaded guilty in Darwin Local Court for failing to adhere to workplace health and safety obligations. The 2026 rollover remains a separate event under investigation and is not related to the 2017 incident.
The Defence Department has not publicly identified the soldier who died in Monday’s rollover beyond confirming his age and sex. Officials have not disclosed his unit or the specific training activity taking place at the time. The Australian Defence Force assured that further details would be shared when available. Police continue to assist in the coronial inquiry, while the Army conducts its internal review. As of now, authorities have not announced any conclusions regarding the cause of the vehicle rollover or the contributing factors behind the fatal crash.
